What is therapy?

Psychotherapy, also called talk therapy or counseling, is a form of treatment aimed at relieving emotional distress and improving mental health. Therapy sessions are structured meetings between a licensed provider and a client.  Different type of treatment strategies may be used to help the client work toward the goal of improving some aspect of their life.

Clinicians such as licensed mental health counselors (LMHC) or social workers (LICSW/LCSW) do not prescribe medication, but can refer you to providers who can during treatment.

How can therapy help me?

In addition to helping you better understand yourself and others, therapy can help:

  • Teach you coping skills to decrease stress
  • Navigate life transitions
  • Make positive lifestyle changes
  • Improve your self-esteem
  • Improve your mood
  • Improve communication skills to help you in your relationships
  • Create healthy boundaries with others
How does online therapy work?

Online therapy (also known as teletherapy) is a way to meet with your therapist using a video platform. Teletherapy is a safe, convenient way to do therapy right from the comfort of your own home. We use a HIPAA compliant, secure video platform to protect your privacy during sessions. You can access this video platform from your phone, laptop, or tablet just by clicking the link in your reminder emails or in your patient portal.

What types of therapy does Rachel Boyer, LMHC, provide?

I work with a variety of conditions and stressors, with a primary focus on Mood and Eating Disorders.  I individualize treatment to the client’s unique needs, and use different treatment techniques from modalities such as Cognitive Behavioral and Dialectical Behavioral Therapies. I provide individual and group therapy sessions for adolescents and adults.

What should I expect during a first appointment?

The first appointment is called an “intake session” that will involve gathering a lot of information like: what brings you to therapy, what your symptoms are, your current life situation, your developmental history, medical history, etc. We will discuss my approach to therapy, your goals and needs, and the structure of therapy (frequency and duration). We also address formal procedures regarding things like intake forms, policies, payment and confidentiality.

How long does therapy last?

Everyone is different, but typically people notice some improvement within 12 sessions.  Within the first 1-3 sessions, we will develop your goals for treatment and decide how often to meet.  Around the 12th session, we will check-in on our frequency of sessions and if we feel it is time to adjust or continue as is.

Most clients start out having therapy sessions on a weekly or bi-weekly basis, and eventually decrease the frequency of their sessions as they begin to feel better.  This gives them more time to practice the skills they’ve learned in therapy, outside of therapy.  Many clients will continue sessions according to what is helpful for them, and it is best to keep open conversation with your therapist on what is most helpful for you.

How much do sessions cost?

See our current fees HERE. If I am not in-network with your insurance and you plan to submit your payment to your insurance for reimbursement, I can provide you with a superbill, which is a service statement required by insurance companies.
